Northumberland Lightning look to strike recruiting players

Right of the back of the Super Bowl, Northumberland Lightning American Football Club is upping their recruitment drive after great initial interest.

The first training session attracted over 20 players, only 3 with experience. In the first few weeks of training numbers grew, with experienced individuals coming in to help out.

They still have a long way to go, but are hoping that the interest piqued from the big game over the weekend will want to get new, and old players, involved in the game in the North East.

Club Chairman Stuart Dick commented on the progress being made: “The initial interest in the side has been excellent, despite having no place to call home (as of yet). We have 45 names with registered interest, with about half attending training, but most clubs have around 70 players, coaches and staff.”

“The great thing about American Football is that it’s a game for all ages, shapes and sizes. We have players who range from 6”5 220lbs, to 5”8 265lbs, to 5”10 170lbs, with so many different positions, there is always a position for you to play.”

The club is currently looking for a place to call home, and is in talks with a number of venues in Mid-Northumberland.

“We need to be based in the centre of Northumberland, with Gateshead and Durham nearby, we have to develop our talent pool, which includes a youth set-up and a women’s team, we already have 10+ names down to start the first Senior Women’s side.”

“The great thing about our sport is it is mixed sex, Women are welcome to play for the Lightning Senior side as well as the Women’s team.”
