Benson becomes a Knight

Brent Benson has become Birmingham Knights’ first import signing ahead of the 2013/14 BBL season.

The 6′ 2″ American combo guard brings with him a wealth of experience from both sides of the Atlantic, after studying and playing out of Texas State University, averaging 14ppg., before embarking on a professional career in Poland with Euroleague side, Asseco Prokem.

The Gainesville native returned to the USA where he also attended training camp for NBA D-League side, Springfield Armor, and has since developed upon coaching at college camps and running his own academy.

27-year-old Benson is looking forward to being able to develop as a player, and also as a mentor for some of the younger members of the Knights roster so far: “I am excited about joining the Birmingham Knights for the upcoming season. I am familiar with hard work and inner drive and look forward to bringing leadership and experience to the Knights. My ability to work hard as a team player on and off the court allows me to communicate well with younger players. I feel I will be an asset to the team going to the next level.”

Knights’ Head Coach Paul Douglas is pleased with capturing his first import player and how he can bring more than just a performance on game night: “We have been working on bringing Brent in for some time now and I am extremely happy to have finally secured his signature. He is a very humble, hardworking young man who I think will be a massive hit with the fans and also brings some leadership to our young squad.

“We both agree on how the game should be played and feel that his style of play will fit perfectly with the way we want to play this season. Brent can shoot the ball, defend and will be great in our community programmes plus I am looking forward to seeing him work with our younger players through our Apprenticeship and Academy programmes,” added Douglas.

Benson is due to arrive in Birmingham at the start of September in time for two home warm-up games against Dublin Thunder and a USA All-Star Select team on September 7th and 8th respectively.
