Week 17 review

Another NFL Regular season is done and dusted, and 12 teams are now preparing themselves for a run at the Vince Lombardi trophy when the Superbowl heads to Indianapolis in early February. Coincidentally, it’s the Indianapolis Colts who have secured the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Game of the Week

Green Bay Packers 45-41 Detroit Lions

Yes, I picked a game between two teams who had very little to fight for in the last weekend of the season….but I don’t care, I love offence and this had record breaking amounts.

Matt Flynn started for the Green Bay Packers (are sure this is your game of the week I hear you cry) against a Detroit Team looking to build momentum into the playoffs. The two QB’s duelled it out as both Defences obviously attended a New Year’s Party and were still hung-over. Sam Bradford threw for 520 yards, 5 TD’s and yet still ended up on the losing side. That is because Green Bay backup Matt Flynn threw for 480 yards and 6 TD’s, amounting 1000 yards of passing offense in a Single Game.

Coach of the Week

Tom Coughlin – New York Giants

I hate with a passion the New York Giants, but credit where credit is due, he beat the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East, and when you are in the playoffs, anything can happen.

Dallas are usually a very good late season team with Tony Romo at the helm, but unfortunately for the state of Texas they will not have an NFC Representative in the playoffs.

Offensive Player of the Week

The Quarterback of the Green Bay Packers – Aar…..Matt Flynn

Back to Back weeks the Starting QB of the Green Bay Packers gets the nod for this award, this time it is Matt Flynn. He destroyed records held by Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre by throwing for 6 (SIX) Touchdowns on a freezing cold night a Lambeau field. I should probably mention WR Jordy Nelson for grabbing 3 TD’s and Detroit’s duo of Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson (200+ Yard game), but I’ll give it to the backup

Defensive Player of the Week

Jared Allen – Minnesota Vikings

He finished on a 3-13 team, but that can’t be blamed on NFL Sack Leader Jared Allen. In an attempt to beat Michael Strahan’s 22.5 Sack record, the Mullet wearing defensive end managed 3.5 sacks on the Chicago Bears, giving him 22 on the season.

A Phenomenal season on a very poor team will be little consolation however, as he will be forced once again to watch the playoffs from the comfort of his own home.

Disappointment of the Week

Week 17 in general.

In all honestly, it was a very poor week in terms of excitement, there was no “win and in” type games other than the Sunday Night Game, which I was too bitter to watch, and It was just difficult to get excited about.

Other Thoughts

  • Brent Celek is a Top 5 Tight End when used correctly; I haven’t seen a tight end move the pile like him in a long time.
  • Washington needs a Quarterback.
  • Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks will be the best WR duo in the league for a while.
  • Mark Sanchez has got to go. He is an awful NFL Quarterback.

Playoff Picks – Wild Card Round

  • Cincinnati Bengals over Houston Texans
  • Pittsburgh Steelers over Denver Broncos
  • Atlanta Falcons over New York Giants
  • Detroit Lions over New Orleans Saints
