USA ease to win over Great Britain in Manchester warm-up

Despite their heroic efforts early on in the game, Great Britain’s men were forced to submit to the pressures placed on them by the reigning world and Olympic champions, the USA, as they were beaten soundly 118-78 in Manchester.

In front of a 17,000-strong crowd, who primarily had come to see some of the best stars of the NBA, they were not disappointed.

Only the once did Great Britain have the lead, with Sheffield Sharks’ Nate Reinking supplying a sublime basket from outside the arc, showing what at times the BBL has to offer, and although with those in attendance roaring every time a USA dunk was made, the home side were determined to stay in touch, however late in the first quarter the visitors pulled ahead and a three pointer from Carmelo Anthony made it 33-20 to round off the stanza.

It was the turning point, ultimately killing off any opportunity for a shock victory.

There was a slight glimmer of hope early on in the second period, but quickly extinguished as sloppy play from GB set in with nine turnovers in the quarter, tough defence and great transitioning showed those in the arena and watching at home the quality that USA possess, as they took complete control.

Much of the same came after the half time, and the 30 point barrier some British fans were hoping to keep the score to, was reached and passed midway through the third quarter.

The sheer quality on show from Team USA goes without saying, but one highlight of the night in terms of British basketball came from captain Andrew Sullivan.

An impressive 11 points in six and a half minutes, which included three three-pointers and two free throws, showed he was still capable of producing that game. It must also be said, he was extremely calm and relaxed whilst on court in what the Leicester Riders’ man described in training would be the biggest game of his career so far.

It always looked like an impossible task, but with a week away from the Olympics, more preparation can now be done, lessons can be learnt and progress can be made. Tonight, Great Britain did do their country proud, now the Olympics can allow for the country to be truly proud of them when they represent at such a prestigious event, and qualification out of the group stage could be just the ticket.
