Trio return for Steelers

The Sheffield Steelers have confirmed the re-signings of GB & Steelers Captain Jonathan Phillips, Jason Hewitt and Lee Esders.
Phillips joined the Steelers in 2006 from hometown club Cardiff and will be spending his 7th season in Sheffield, his fifth as Captain.
Hewitt arrived a year earlier after the London Racers folded and will be playing his 8th year with the Steelers whilst it will be just the second season as a Steeler for young Lee Esders who impressed all in his first year with Ryan Finnerty’s side
“I’m of course delighted that these three important players to the club have returned. Jono is our Captain and our leader and anyone who knows Hewey knows he is our heartbeat. With many new players coming into the team this season its important that our core remained in place. Guys who know what is expected to be a Sheffield Steeler.
“Lee Esders was a gamble last year coming from Hull but the guy showed more work ethic and desire than pretty much any other player on the team. He fought his way into the top 9 forwards and and refused to let go as the year progressed. Lee could have signed elsewhere this summer, he has come on that much. When we signed Colin Shields I explained that he again would be coming into camp as a number 10 thus giving him the option to move on if he wanted to
“The response I got back was just the one I wanted to hear, he called me and said that I told him last year he was a 10 and he worked into my top 9 and, that he would do so again this season. He didn’t want to play anywhere else and was a Steeler”
Captain Jonathan Phillips is already excited about the year ahead “I think we have seen by the stance Finner and the club has taken that we are going in the right direction. Bringing Colin Shields in, signing Jeff Legue early are all signs that we will be a lot stronger next season. Jason Hewitt returning is important as he leads by example and work ethic, you can’t cheat Hewey, he cares about his club that much and demands of any new player coming in. Lee Esders deserved his contract to be renewed. I don’t think Ive seen a guy come into a team and just work that hard for 8 months to earn a place. He will only get better and better and become more important to us down the road”
