Tendler treble helps Stingrays claim point

Jereme Tendler hit a hat-trick to earn Excel Hull Stingrays a point in a 7-6 defeat after penalty shots to Edinburgh Capitals in Murrayfield in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League.

The Canadian forward, Stingrays’ leading scorer with 50 goals last season, took his tally to five for the weekend following his brace in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Braehead Clan.

In a topsy-turvy clash north of the border, Stingrays – again missing six players – at least returned home with something to show for their efforts.

Markers from Derek Campbell and Sam McCluskey (powerplay) – his first for the club – helped Stingrays fly into a two-goal lead inside five minutes.

Marcis Zembergs pulled a goal back for Capitals before Campbell’s second – and 100th goal in all Elite League competitions – 10 seconds into the second period with Stingrays short-handed restored his side’s two-goal cushion.

However, three goals in seven minutes from Rene Jarolin, Sean Menton and Zembergs put Capitals in front for the first time but a quickfire Tendler brace saw Stingrays lead 5-4.

Player-coach Richard Hartmann tied it up at 5-5 just 37 seconds into the final period and Jiri Hanzal nudged Capitals ahead again before Tendler (powerplay) secured his hat-trick to take the game into overtime.

After that failed to find the winner, Hanzal registered the winner in sudden-death penalty shots to earn Edinburgh the extra point.
