Roller Derby mayhem over the next fortnight

Some of the country’s top roller derby teams have a number of bouts coming up over the next few weeks and here at UKAmericanSportsFans.com we have a taster of what there is on offer!

First up this weekend sees Sheffield Steel Rollergirls take on both the A and B sides of Dublin Roller Derby on Saturday May 4th at Ponds Forge, where the home sides of the All Stars and Crucibelles will take to the track.

Two special young fans will also be presented with Fan of the Match; having the opportunity to have a team picture and a signed t-shirt.

This will be carried on throughout the year, with fans both young or old having the opportunity to be the lucky recipient. Banners, cakes, loud cheering and dedication at bouts will help grab the attention of these fearless ladies to win a signed poster and t-shirt for the following home event.

Doors open at 1pm, tickets are £7 in advance, £9 on the door, under 12 for free.

Not only will SSRG be hosting the two Dublin teams but there will be the usual fanfare of a home bout, with market stalls, cakes and a circus corner.

If Sheffield is a little too far, Nottingham’s roller derby team, the Hellfire Harlots, will also host their second bout of the 2013 season this Saturday, taking on the South West Angels of Terror (S.W.A.T.) at Lee Westwood Centre, Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus where doors open at 12.45pm.

Following the Harlots’ defeat at their last home game in March and their subsequent triumph in Newcastle two weeks ago, the Hellfire Harlots have no intention of losing on home turf again.

Team captain el Visious said: “We’ve been working really hard to stay focussed and play our game. Our last game in Newcastle [a win for the Harlots by 225-90] put us back on top after a shaky start to the season and that is where we intend to stay!”

An advanced mixed bout starts at 1pm – made up of female skaters hailing from across the UK, before the main event Hellfire Harlots vs. S.W.A.T. begins at 3pm. Homemade refreshments will be available together with a raffle and local businesses selling their wares too!

For away fans, Nottingham’s Hellfire Harlots will be taking on the London Rockin’ Rollers the following weekend of Saturday, 11th May.

That day also sees Leeds Roller Dolls host their fourth Great Yorkshire Showdown; a 6 team tournament hosted by the Whip-Its.

They’ll be sharing track time with five other teams from around the country to battle it out for the title in this fun and closely-fought battle. After a successful and convincing victory over Sheffield’s Crucibelles, the Whip-Its have been seeded as the top team, so the pressure’s on for them to secure a home win.

The teams that will feature on the day include, Bruising Banditas, Furness Firecrackers, Big Bucks High Rollers, Birmingham Blitz Dames B team and Rainy City’s newly-formed Bet Lynch Mob.

LRD will also be hosting their annual art auction, in order to raise desperately need funds for the development of the team. The auction lots are already online, where you can bid on them until 5pm on May 11th.

All funds from the art auction will go towards the ongoing development of LRD. Proceeds from the ‘Art & Heart’ auction will help with travel costs for the Whip-Its to get to Vienna on June 8th, where they play Vienna Rollergirls.
