Out Of Your League: Rainy City Roller Girls

We continue our popular feature profiling thosse derby men and dames who take to the track in the name of good times.

Name: Niky Maddison

League: Rainy City Roller Girls

Derby / Skater name: Maddy Nuff

Age: 37

Day job: Currently in between jobs

How did you choose your derby name?

It stems from a childhood nickname

What is your usual role on the rink? Blocker

What do you think is your greatest strength or asset in that role?

I believe my greatest strength is being part of a solid defence in keeping the opposing jammer back or catching a goat. It used to be all about the big hits for me, but I’ve come to find positional blocking to be much more effective.

What do you enjoy most about derby?

The team spirit within our whole league. From our newbies, to our seasoned vets, to our refs and NSO’s. Everyone is important!

Who have been your toughest opponents to date and why?

I would have to say, for me personally, it’s Stockholm Roller Derby. Tough as old boots on the track – off the track the most amazing bunch of ladies!

Which of your team mates are you glad you don’t have to skate against and why?

RED – she is my mentor and a beast on track. Fast and with MASSIVE hits!

Please tell us a word of roller derby slang and explain what it means.

Clusterf*^k – basically it means to mess with the opposing blockers for a few seconds to distract them just enough for your jammer to get through.

What would you say to fresh meat out there thinking of getting involved?

Don’t think, just DO!

When can people next see you skate?
