New WWE show to air in October

It has been announced by WWE and ION Television that a brand new weekly hour-long show will air from October, named WWE Main Event.

It will take Superstars and Divas from both Raw and SmackDown, and tie in with current on-running storylines. The WWE hopes to reach 100 million households through the ION Television network.

“WWE looks forward to this new partnership with ION Television,” WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon said. “We are excited about producing this new television show, WWE Main Event, and bringing our fans to ION Television every Wednesday.”

“ION Television is delighted to begin a new partnership with such a successful and well-recognized franchise as WWE,” Brandon Burgess, CEO of ION Media Networks said. “As a general entertainment network with a solid foundation, WWE Main Event is a great addition to our lineup that features something for everyone. We look forward to introducing our ION audience to all of the excitement and drama WWE has to offer, as well as welcoming a passionate new fan base to the network.”

It may come as a surprise though, considering the planned (and forever stalling) WWE Network. That, together with skepticism that with Raw moving to three hours each week which continues to add more Superstars from the SmackDown roster; does a Wednesday night offering mean SmackDown is being wound down and brand extension completely eradicated?

Time will tell for sure – but at least there will be, hopefully, more to look forward to in the autumn time.
