MK Lions sign Dobbins

BBL big man, Justin Dobbins, has today been signed by the Prestige Homes Milton Keynes Lions having been released by the One Health Sheffield Sharks six days ago. Dobbins first opponent upon his return to action? The Sheffield Sharks of course.

“We wanted to get better before every game, that’s all we’re trying to do – get better before every game” laughed Lions owner Vince Macaulay as the timing of the signing was pointed out.

And get better, the Lions likely will. Dobbins takes to Milton Keynes season averages of 16.1ppg, 10.3 rpg and 1.2 bpg where he will, according to Macaulay, help strengthen the team’s interior.

“We’re just trying to get a little more aggressive around the basket to complement what we do with Demarius (Bolds) and Daniel (Northern)..we feel we need to complement our inside play and strengthen up our defensive attitude as well.

“We wanted to get much, much more aggressive around the basket. The way we play creates a lot of opportunities for our big men. If you look at the big men we’ve had over the last few years; people like Shawn Jamison, people like Mike New, people like Robert Youngblood, the way we play lends itself to those kinds of people and he (Dobbins) gives us great opportunities around the basket and that’s what we wanted to do.

“Howard just wasn’t able to give us that added bite. He’s (Crawford) extremely talented but we wish him well. We just wanted to upgrade and we could upgrade at that position.”

Vince Macaulay’s position on where the strength of his team lies is in stark contrast to Sheffield Sharks player-coach Atiba Lyons, who only earlier this week stated the release of Dobbins and re-signing of former Sharks point guard Ryan Patton, was to help the team become more competitive in what he sees as a ‘guard-orientated’ league.

With the BBL signing deadline fast approaching (February 28th), can Lions fans expect to see any more signings? Macaulay certainly isn’t ruling it out…

“We were disappointed (with) the way we went out of the cup. We were certainly disappointed (with) the way we went out of the trophy by one basket and if we see an opportunity to get better, we’ll take it.”
