Hornets sting Broncos with last second TD

The Glasgow Hornets claimed a remarkable 30-25 win last night in their BAFA Adult Flag league game against the Grangemouth Broncos.

With just 4.5 seconds left, the Hornets found themselves near the halfway line and down by a solitary point, yet somehow managed to score the winning touchdown to spark jubilant celebration amongst the Hornets players. Quarterback Nicky Farrell connected with Willie McLaughlin on the dramatic last score.

In a tight and close knit affair, that had both incredible and sloppy plays in equal measure, the Broncos took the lead on the first drive of the game and were always able to match the Hornets score for score.

While the Broncos often drove methodically down the field, Glasgow relied on individual brilliance for big plays. Andrew Gibson made a crucial interception near the Broncos endzone that led to a simple touchdown, while big plays from McLaughlin, Farrell and Richie Moore kept drives going when they seemed destined to fizzle out.

Moore, playing with a leg injury, scored on a mazy touchdown run from well inside his own half that kept the Hornets in the game in the second period. In most games that would have been the highlight score, but with the last throw of the dice Farrell and McLaughlin were able to produce an ending to break Broncos hearts.

The win now leaves the Hornets firmly in the driving seat for a place at Finals Day in Sheffield at the end of the month. Their fate will be decided at the weekend when the Edinburgh Wolverines are scheduled to play four games and need to win all if they are to cause an upset and advance to Finals Day in their rookie season.
