EIHL Game Report: Cardiff Devils 3 Braehead Clan 4

It was the visitors who skated away with the points on Saturday evening in Cardiff Bay, as the Braehead Clan narrowly defeated the Cardiff Devils, 3-4.

Temporary netminder Greg Blais was strong throughout the match for the Devils, but it was the Clan who capitalised on their power play chances to deservedly take the game.

Following a relatively average start for both teams, Coach Ryan Finnerty called a timeout to settle his Clan team. This tactic proved to be successful for the visitors, as they went on to score the first goal courtesy of a strike from Nathan Moon. Just a few minutes later though, the home team levelled the score after Mac Faulkner fired the puck into the back of the net.

Only one goal in the second period, and it was the Devils who were to take the lead with a power play goal from Andrew Lord.

Going into the third and it was all to play for, as either team could have walked away with the win. Just 23 seconds into the period, Clan captain Ash Goldie shot one into the net, to send the Clan fans wild and level the score.

At 43:38, Devils’ Andrew Conboy received a 5+game misconduct for checking from behind. As a result, the Clan capitalised their power play chances with two swift goals; the first was from Goldie who got his second of the night, just ten seconds after Conboy’s penalty.

With Faulkner taking a High Sticking minor at 46:05, this gave the Clan a 5-on-3 opportunity, in which Joel Champagne converted, putting the away team two to the good against the Devils at 46:41.

The Devils pushed on and got the final goal of the match, as Mark Richardson pulled one back with just 18 seconds remaining. However, it was too little too late; the final buzzer sounded with a loud cheer from the Purple Army, as their team prevailed and took home a 3-4 victory.
