Nothing Compares 2 U: 1990s NBA Video Knockout

The 1990s: A wonderful era that gifted us The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, a never-ending stream of films that starred either Wesley Snipes or Bruce Willis, fashion that ranged from the grunge-look to Reebok Pumps and the musical stylings of the original Eminem, Vanilla Ice.

The Nineties also brought about a change in the way the NBA sold itself; mirroring the trends of society and fashion, sporting baggier shorts, a greater number of tattoos and an attitude that was more ‘real’ than ever before.

Advertising agencies followed suit with their selling strategy, with each company adapting their 30 second tv spot to sell, not just the product, but the unique personality of the player who represented the product, the result of which left fans watching sometimes funny, sometimes trippy but always entertaining, adverts.

Here at UKAmericanSportsFans.com we’re going to embrace the 1990s and hold a knock-out tournament involving commercials from that decade. The competition will run from now until the start of the 2013/14 NBA season and all you have to do is watch the video clips and vote for your favourite. The advert with the most votes in each match-up progresses on to the next round until the winner of the best NBA-related advert from the 1990s is crowned.

Here’s a short list of the adverts that didn’t make it into this competition:

Dennis Rodman being told by David Robinson how to live his life – Pizza Hut

Clyde Drexler playing a guy with an inferiority complex which is awkward when you remember the 1992 Dream Team – Denny’s

Gary Payton talks about ice-cream and puppies! – Nike

Shawn Kemp dunks over a Mortal Kombat-like six-armed monster – Reebok

Oh yes, the 90’s were fantastic for commercials.
