Such is the staggered start of the BAFA season that we are at the quarter point and ten teams have yet to pass, run or kick a ball in anger. Six of those do so this weekend, another one will start even though they are 1-0 already. This will leave just three, Yorkshire and Sheffield, and they play each other in Week 5, and the Kent Exiles who were due to play Maidstone but are idle due to the latter pulling out of the league last week.
In the Premier North Birmingham Bulls open their season and indeed the weekend when they visit Coventry on Saturday. Down in the Premier South the current champions London Warriors start the defence of their crown against 0-2 Berkshire, and across town the Olympians start against the East Kent Mavericks.
Also in the South’s top conference last years National League champions Colchester, get their first taste of top-flight football when they visit South Wales.
In the closely contested Midlands, Leicester go to winless Shropshire hoping to start 2014 with a win and put the Revolution in a real big hole.
Ipswich Cardinals are 1-0 after the London Hornets had to forfeit their game a couple of weeks ago, They take their fortunate win record to Watford who had to play to earn their 1-0 start.
New team Portsmouth Dreadnoughts have a home opener for their first game in the big leagues, and they face a Bournemouth side that beat another new team, Torbay, last weekend. This game takes place in the South East conference where there is a big matchup between Gloucester and Solent. Both teams will be looking for a win for different reasons. Gloucester will want to avoid a 0-3 start, whereas Solent are will want to stamp their authority in this group and go to 2-0.
